About

Trula Banner 2023

I’ve been publishing indie work for 16 years now including books and zines. My life is my work is my art; a great deal of my writing is inspired or generated primarily by my life, for example my Mama Series of books are based on various aspects of my motherhood. This is my writing blog that includes information on my books, essays, workshops, and other published works and events. Sometimes personal information and musings on various things going on in the world, my country (USA) most often.

I write and have produced several blogs for many years. I decided to re-launch them in 2021, with previous content being reserved for ‘Throwback Thursday’ sort of posts. New content this year will include video and interactive stuff such as live media. All my blogs here.

I am a freelance writer and an independent, self-published author. I publish and produce my books, blogs, zines, and video content through my publishing house Book Rocker, a division of Earthgarden Workshop.

A life-long resident of the Buckeye state, I live in Lorain county near Lake Erie with my husband Brian, who is a special education teacher and basketball coach. We have 3 grown children and started dating in 1996, married in 1999. 2023 marks our 24th marriage anniversary and 27th year together as a couple. This blog will also include my musings on marriage from time to time. It has been quite a marriage, year 3 married was especially hard as we almost divorced in 2002. But we chose to stay together, and with marriage counseling mended our relationship. Falling back in love with my husband was one of the most beautiful things to ever happen to me. He is my person.

Brian and Trula January 2024
Brian & Trula January 2024. This year we are 52 (me) and 50 (him). The year we started dating we were 24 and 22. I had just turned 24 and Brian turned 22 that Fall! Now all our kids are older than that. Time flies!

My kids were born in 1989, 1994, and 1997. Yes you did the math right! They are grown-ups. They are three of the most interesting people I know. Growing human beings from birth to adulthood has been THE most fascinating experience of my life! I have learned a great deal from my children and they have caused such joy in my life. They are tremendous people, not because of me, but in spite of me. Though not a mommy blog per se, this blog includes stuff about my children and info about my mama writings. I do write more about my motherhood journey and the black American experience in particular on Afro Mama.

Miscellaneous Stuff About Me:

  • Yes, Earthgarden is my real, legal last name. It is not my birth name nor my husband’s name, I legally changed it in 2010. Breckenridge is my birth last name. I planned to choose my own name when I was a little girl, it just took a long time for the name to come to me. Earthgarden suits me perfectly. I also changed my middle name.
  • I was a vegetarian for 24 years, ages 14-38. Yes, my kids were raised vegetarian, check out my Veggie Mama book. I eat meat now but only birds and seafood. I can’t stand other types of flesh.
  • I am passionate about the earth, growing things, ecology, climate change, etc. I blog about it on Earthprint Home & Garden.
  • I am a Capricorn and was born in a snowstorm. I hate winter because I have Raynaud’s syndrome. Cold temperatures are actually very painful for me and physically shows in my hands and feet.
  • SPRING is my favorite season! I love Spring! Although winters in NE Ohio are brutal, there is nothing like an Ohio Spring. It’s a breathtaking and beautiful season here.
  • Pink is my favorite color, and on Wednesdays we wear pink! Shout-out to Mean Girls movie LOL
  • I have dreadlocks, and yes it’s all my real hair. I am the original Dread Mama.
  • Yes, I think I’m cute, so? I don’t know why this bothers some people so much, but whatever. My eyes are my best feature IMO, I have pretty eyes and get frequent compliments on them.
  • I wear glasses/contacts, pretty much can’t see but a foot in front of me without them.
  • I am a HUGE Sesame Street fan. I will cut you over Big Bird, don’t play with me. Seriously though, Sesame Street saved me from significant childhood trauma. It’s basically what got me through.
  • I’m not very friendly or approachable, but willing to give most people a chance long as they act right. I’m not a misanthrope or anything, my default setting towards most people is indifference, not hatred. I feel neutral towards most people most of the time, but when I am close to people, for example friends and certain family members, I love them and am very effusive towards them. The sun rises and sets for me on my kids and husband, in particular.
  • I have had chronic insomnia for most of my life. My parents say I never stopped sleeping like an infant. To this day when I do sleep it’s rarely more than 4-5 hours at a time, and unfortunately I have 1-2 nights/days a week I don’t sleep at all. This is not a brag; I’m surprised my heart hasn’t exploded to be honest. Sleep is SO important!
  • I dress modestly on purpose, for comfort and safety (men act absurd over my body) as well as aesthetics; modest clothes just look nicer to me. I don’t understand wearing tight clothes that show all the creases and folds and lumps of the body, no matter how nice the body is, it looks ugly to me. I make and sell a clothing line that includes accessories called Earthy Style.
  • After a serious health crisis in 2012 I lost a grip of weight and became a fitness enthusiast. Unfortunately I put back on 50 pounds in 2020 from stress-eating and sloth, which resulted in triggering another health crisis in 2021. I’m back on my grind and blog about fitness and weight-loss at Supple Mama.
  • Yes, I know I have wacky eyebrows, they are my signature feature and I find them delightful. Every now and then I have my daughter, a licensed makeup artist, do them nicely so I don’t look too crazy all the time LOL, but following makeup trends is just not something that interests me.
  • I am an extreme introvert, INTJ specifically, and don’t talk much unless I’m super comfortable with you or have to for work. But years ago, back when I actually wanted to win friends and influence people, I read Dale Carnegie’s book and learned how to talk to people like I have some sense. Most of the time.
  • I suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the early ’90s which affects me to this day, and I was born with a mild heart condition, a funky heart murmur. Other than that pretty healthy for a middle-aged lady.
  • If I make it to age 100 I’m getting CRYPTKEEPER 2072 tattooed across my chest.
  • Every day I could eat rice and seaweed. I also love peanut butter, but don’t eat it much because it’s very fattening. I love carrots, turnip greens (any greens really) and all kinds of fruit especially berries.
  • I can still do cartwheels, round-offs, and other basic gymnastics even though I’m 52 years old and have raggedy knees. Now this is a brag, boop!
  • Yes I am really 52! Quit trying to gas me up telling me I look 30s something. Trust, when a real 30s something-person stands next to me I look every bit of my age. I do agree I lok a smidge younger than 52, like maybe I look mid-40s. I’m very thankful for every day of my age because the alternative is DEATH. It’s a blessing to reach middle-age, and a blessing to grow old. As we all know, it’s a privilege denied to many.
